Palm Pre impressions

I played with a Palm Pre today in a Sprint store. It was actually my second trip to the store this weekend – the first time I simply drove past after seeing the 10+ people lining near the door. Anyhoo, here are my initial thoughts:

The Pre is small compared to iPhone.
The screen was [...]

No Chinese on Nokia 5800

Nokia 5800 does not display Chinese out of the box. I find that unacceptable in 2009. Don’t all modern operating systems support Unicode nowadays? Could it be that the Symbian OS has a legacy baggage? Or perhaps this phone just doesn’t have enough internal memory?
One of the attractive iPhone features was [...]

Nokia 5800 initial sync annoyance

We purchased an unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone earlier this week.  For $200 it was a great deal.  The phone arrived yesterday.
Nokia 5800 is Nokia’s first phone with touch screen. As such the touch UI is still crude. One thing that ticked me off was the useless manual which said nothing on syncing [...]

One GSM Palm Pre wanted

Palm Pre was announced on Thursday in CES. I was busy the past two days, so I only got to read more on it last night and today. And after viewing Palm’s official CES presentation, I am really anticipating the release date.
While I like my iPhone, I am really annoyed by Apple’s thinking [...]

Meizu reviewed

When iPhone v1.0 was first announced by Apple two years ago, Meizu also appeared on the Interweb as a blaring iPhone copycat.  Six months into iPhone 3G and after countless disappointments, Meizu is finally a reality…in China.  A review (Chinese, English translation) is up, I wonder how much a unlocked version will cost.

Hoping for that ideal external iPhone 3G battery

The simple fact of the matter is that I need an external battery for my iPhone in order to keep up with a whole day of window shopping with my wife. When she shops, I surf, and the iPhone’s built-in battery simply isn’t built for such gruesome task.
There are a few external batteries [...]

“大四川”的小笼包

我们家附近的“大四川”饭馆下礼拜二就要关门了,那里的小笼包是我记忆里最棒的,今天中午我们特地跑去点了两套,好好地开了一个离别午会。

Gigabyte GSmart MS820

Turns out the HTC Touch Diamond is more of a dud than nirvana. Sure it has a fantastic VGA screen, but its TouchFlo 3D interface got hammered by reviewers for non-responsiveness. With a $700 price tag for an unlock Europe version, it’s too rich for my blood.
That’s why Gigabyte’s GSmart MS820 interests me. [...]

Upgraded iPhone to firmware v2.0

After a whole day at work thinking about upgrading my iPhone’s firmware, I finally came home and actually went through with the upgrade.
The download happened in the morning, as I blogged earlier. The firmware upgrade took about 15 minutes. The data restore and phone re-activation took another 2 minutes. I am still [...]

Almost bricked my iPhone

This morning my carpool buddy told me he would be 15 minutes late, so I thought, why not use this time to update my iPhone firmware to 2.0?! I thought it would only take 10 or so minutes.
I started my desktop computer, fired up iTunes (which I upgraded to 7.7 last night, with 2 [...]
