Nokia 5800 initial sync annoyance

We purchased an unlocked Nokia 5800 XpressMusic phone earlier this week.  For $200 it was a great deal.  The phone arrived yesterday.

Nokia 5800 is Nokia’s first phone with touch screen. As such the touch UI is still crude. One thing that ticked me off was the useless manual which said nothing on syncing your existing contacts from PC.

Mood: grumpy. Action: online research.

The software on the included CD was outdated, so I installed drivers and sync/management software (Ovi Suite) from Nokia.com. I happily plugged in the phone thinking it would be smooth sailing from then on, only to get rejected by Ovi Suite everytime. It would complain that the phone is not in “PC Suite” mode even though it clearly was.

Mood: irritated. Action: cursing in my mind.

The error message persisted through many PC/phone reboots and one software uninstall/reinstall. I was sitting in front of my PC with a fancy smartphone that wasn’t so smart.

Mood: frustrated. Action: cursing out loud.

It was already 1am in the morning, and as the last attempt for the day, I opened the device manager, found an entry named “5800 XpressMusic”, right clicked on it, and selected to update driver. To be frank, I was expecting something along the line of “no new driver found”. Instead, driver update went through, and I ended up with two additional entries in the device manager, “S60 Device” and “Nokia 5800 XpressMusic USB (COM3)”. Phone connect and PC sync worked a-okay afterwards.

Mood: annoyed. Action: went to sleep.
